First week in Emmen

This week it started raining a lot again. When it rains people have more sympathy for us and they let us in more. The blackberries are getting ripe and I am going to make some jam. They are everywhere and I don't think the dutch people eat them.

This week I also bought some left handed hair scissors and gave myself a haircut. I figured it would just save money because unless you can find a turkish place for 10 euro, all haircuts are at least 17 euro. This is not a cheap country to live in. 

We went to Germany a couple times this week. The houses are bigger in Germany. Everything is not so neat and tidy, but it is a bit more spacious and it is nice to feel a little more open. 

The father in law a potential that we found has come to church the past couple weeks. He is a kind of free range chicken with religion as he kind of just does things by himself. He went to the Philippines or something and baptized 50 or so people there. He doesn't belong to a church or denomination or anything, just does his own thing. He said that God woke him up so he could come to our church. This week, he brought a friend who spent a long time investigating the Jehovahs Witness and the Pentecostals, but neither satisfied him. Hopefully he will be able to find it with us.

The Branch president here has been on vacation and I was finally able to meet him this week. It turns out that he is a good friend of Milene Koning and her mother and is going to be the one who baptizes her, so it is really nice to be able to keep contact with them. With any luck I will be able to travel down to Breda to attend the baptism. But it is in October because this whole country is going to be in Spain or France on vacation for the next 6 weeks. Kids here only have a 6 week summer vacation. 

Not a ton else happened this week, it is pretty hard to remember. We got soaked through a couple times.

The funny thing about this picture is the angle. Packard is a good 8 inches taller than his com.  Everything is a little less exciting now that it is the second week, but it is still good. I have started to get a little homesick now that I can not really speak to anybody comfortable but my companion, but I will get over it. Our investigators are doing well. Efrem worried us a little bit this week. He is going to school so that he can get into politics and help fight fro freedom in his home country. He is nervous about getting baptized because he doesn't want to have to make a commitment to God and then lie in politics. He was forced into the militia there at age 16 and was shot 3 times. He is awesome though. He has a good testimony and everything. He is also worried that the gangsters that his country have in Holland are going to hunt him down and kill him. Tall Baller Dutchies

So this week we found out that our district is getting a bit famous around here. We have heard from a couple different sources that we are referred to by everybody as the Tall Baller Dutchies or something of the sort. We have been trying to talk to new people a lot but this is a little surprising because there are so many missionaries circulating, but I guess it is starting to become a thing.  I have been learning how to play basketball from my companions a lot now, so i am actually not that bad anymore. I try to go and lift for a little towards the end of each gym time so i do not get super weak. One hour is not enough time. I gained a few pounds in the first couple of weeks but I started eating just a bowl of oatmeal or plain shredded wheat in the morning, and then alternating between an actual meal and just a salad for lunch and dinner so now I am back to my original weight. Goodbye to Zaandam and a really cool castle

Muiderslot   Some people hate Mormons. Most just hate religion in general too much to bother to know what a Mormon is. But then most of them are really good people. The dutch people are very simple and down to earth. They live in small houses, have few possessions and are fully satisfied. It is remarkable with how happy they make themselves with so little. They just need a bed, a piece of bread with cheese on it, and 20 square feet with flowers on it and they get the most they want out of life. That is super impressive, but unfortunately it also makes it really hard to make them comfortable enough to let you invade their 20 square feet and preach the gospel.  This week I am getting transferred to Den Haag. Zaandam was a short stay, only 2 transfers, compared to 4, then 3, then 4 in my other cities.
